More details

Written in collaboration with the research agency Substance, the report draws on research and project experience gained by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation over the past ten years, and articulates how sports initiatives can be designed to meet the challenge of urban youth violence.

It demonstrates that sporting activities aimed at gang members will be most successful if they work with the existing hierarchies of the gang, involve peer mentors who are realistic role models, and ensure that the project is firmly rooted within the local community.

In the past we thought of the teacher/coach as the knowledgeable expert and the participants as empty vessels to be filled by this expert. This system has changed, especially in the transference of life skills training. We would encourage you to embrace the changes to facilitate learning in the adolescents who you will encounter during these workshops. The challenge that will face facilitators is to creatively deliver this diverse material to different target groups. Facilitators should remain committed, however, to the facilitation process as opposed to the presentation process.

What Sport can do for Africa & What Africa can do for Sport
More details

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation brings together voices from all over the world to advocate for the wider uses of sport. We have been supporting and building partnerships with community sport and development projects across Africa and elsewhere in the world for over ten years. Over this period, we have seen how sport can be used to address some of the greatest development challenges, and this has strengthened our long-held belief that sport is a powerful tool for tackling broader social issues.
Our experience has also strengthened our conviction that sport has the potential to play a much greater role in development in Africa than it currently does, and that sport could succeed where other initiatives may fail, reaching people who might otherwise be excluded, and strengthening many existing development policies and projects.
